In January, the nation’s telecom subscriber base increased slightly to 1,170.75 million, driven by net customer growth in the fixed line segment, according to a report from the industry regulator TRAI, which was made public on Friday.

Mobile telephony saw a net gain of 0.09 million subscribers, while the wireline market saw a net gain of 0.28 million users.

While BSNL and Vodafone Idea (VIL) lost 0.28 million users, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel collectively recruited 0.29 million new consumers, offsetting the gain.

In its subscriber report for the month of January 2023, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India stated that “the number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,170.38 million at the end of December 2022 to 1,170.75 million at the end of January 2023, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.03 percent.”

In January, there were 27.73 million wireline or fixed line connections nationwide, up from 27.45 million in December.

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Quadrant were the main drivers of the growth in the wireline market, adding 0.21 million, 0.11 million, and 5,949 new customers, respectively.

The largest loser in the market was the state-owned MTNL, which lost 29,857 users. Following it were BSNL, which lost 19,781 wireline clients, Tata Teleservices, 9,444, VIL, 3,727, and Reliance Communications, which lost 275 clients.

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel gained 1.65 million and 1.28 million users, respectively, in the mobile or wireless sector. By losing 1,48,000,000, 1,35,000,000, and 2,960, respectively, mobile customers, BSNL, VIL, and MTNL restrained the segment’s expansion.

The number of broadband subscribers in the nation increased from 832.2 million in December to 839.18 million in January.

“By the end of January-23, the top five service providers held 98.39% of the market share among all broadband subscribers. These included Reliance Jio Infocomm (434.02 million subscribers), Bharti Airtel (237.40 million subscribers), Vodafone Idea (125.03 million subscribers), BSNL (27.05 million subscribers), and Atria Convergence (2.14 million subscribers) “said TRAI.
