In order to keep teenagers as safe from potentially harmful users on the platforms as possible, Meta Features that it has started rolling out a set of features on Facebook and Instagram. Among other upcoming changes, the company will give its apps more filters for the “People You May Know” feature. In the majority of countries around the world, including India, Facebook and Instagram are among the most widely used social networking apps.
The company says these features will be focused on limiting the spread of intimate images. Meta announced the new privacy tools in a post on Tuesday.
According to Meta, any account that has been reported by a young user will be automatically taken out of the ‘People You May Know’ section for other young people.
Teenage users of Facebook and Instagram will not be able to text reported suspicious accounts, even engaging in conversations with adults will be prompted and questioned to determine if they are familiar with that specific person.
According to Meta, a safety notice will also enable people to prevent communications with these people. Meta has come under fire over the years for not doing more to protect its younger users.
According to the business, it is collaborating with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to develop a platform for teenagers who run the risk of having their private photos published online.
Last year, Facebook changed its name to Meta to better reflect its Web3 initiatives.
The division responsible for developing technology for the metaverse, Reality Labs, at Meta, reported a $3.7 billion (roughly Rs. 30,476 crore) loss for the third quarter of this year.
Adding to a $2.9 billion (roughly Rs. 22,970 crore) loss in the first quarter of this year, the company revealed in July that its Reality Labs division had lost $2.8 billion (roughly Rs. 23,050 crore) in the second quarter.
The unit lost $10.2 billion (roughly Rs. 83,969 crore) annually in the previous year, bringing the total losses to almost $20 billion (roughly Rs. 1,64,628 crore) as of September 30 of this year.
