Twitter announced on Wednesday that it was offering an annual plan for Twitter Blue, a subscription service that includes the coveted “verified” badge, at a discount from its monthly cost.
Instead of paying $8 per month on the web and $11 per month for Apple devices to subscribe to the service, users can pay an annual fee of $84 to do so.
According to Twitter, the discount would be accessible in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia.
Elon Musk, a multibillionaire, bought Twitter for $44 billion last year, and since then, the company has undergone changes, including new Twitter Blue subscription plans.
Prior to now, only verified posts by public figures like journalists, politicians, and other well-known people have been given the blue check mark. However, a subscription option that is available to anyone willing to pay was launched last year to help Twitter increase revenue as Musk battles to keep advertisers.
Musk said earlier in December that by the end of the year, Twitter will offer a higher tier with no advertisements, reducing the number of advertisements in the Basic blue tick to half.
On the same day that users overwhelmingly chose to remove Musk as the social media platform’s CEO, Musk also declared that Twitter would only allow paying Twitter Blue subscribers to vote in polls related to public policy.
The CEO of Twitter had stated that he would follow the poll’s results, but he had not specified when he would resign if that were to be the case. He has not yet chosen a replacement for the position.
Since taking over in October, Musk has swiftly fired thousands of employees and members of top management, vacillated over how much to charge for Twitter Blue, the company’s subscription service, and allowed accounts that had been blocked under the previous administration, including that of former US President Donald Trump, to reappear.
